Today I went to the Penoboscot Marine Museum to visit their library, which has a lot of old documents from the area in it. You can visit the library by appointment in the winter. I was searching through the Sargent papers, hoping to find the letter written by Robert Lord Sargent to his son Winthrop Sargent in 1831. The copy I presently have is a copy of a copy of a copy. When I have the original letter edited properly, I'll be sharing the scan here along with a transcription of the letter. The museum staff and director, Niles Parker, were very helpful. And it really is amazing the kinds of information they have at the museum library.
I went through a box of "S" folders, with the Thomas Sargent papers being one. Thomas was a packrat and boy am I glad! In the folder I also found two sales agreements - one in which Thomas Sargent purchases land from Samuel and Mary Butman and one in which William Butman (Mary Sargent's father) sells Thomas 1/16th of the "Schooner Sultana" in 1849.
Googling Schooner Sultana yields the following links - I'm not sure if these links are referring to the Sultana mentioned in the agreement between Thomas Sargent and William Butman. It seems unlikely that a ship built in 1767 would still be in good service in 1849. But as you can see, judging from the links below, the Schooner Sultana seemed to be on it's last legs. Why all this talk of Butman ships when this is a Sargent blog? Well, William Butman is Mary F. Sargent's father. His signature is on the agreement above.

Hi, Penny - perhaps our lines converge back a ways - your Samuel and my Winthrop Sargent might have been cousins? There were many Sargents in Massachusetts. I will check back through my email and see if you sent an email through there. :-)
